The Search for best Halal-certified food places in Singapore

Great news for people living or hanging out in the west!

If you are looking for an affordable pasta and mexican food that is Halal-certified in Singapore, head down to Choa Chu Kang's Lot 1 basement and try the spaghetti at Jalapeno's Peppers Express, the Halal-certified subsidiary of the popular Jalapeno's Steak and Seafood Cafe (which also manages the similar Halal-certified food place 'Spaghetti Too').

The food there is decent, neat, but comes with no frills. Simple, sleek and definitely affordable.

Service is average, since you are required to order from the counter, make your payment and wait to be served. U have to take your utensils and the optional chili flakes and grated cheese from behind the counter. This type of service is increasingly popular in Singapore these days, but for the affordability of the food, I say thumbs up!

As with the service, the food place is not exactly a restaurant. Rather, it is set to look like an open-air cafe on the basement of the mall. Probably that is why it has been aptly called as 'Express'.

I seldom shop at the west of Singapore, but due to a friend's recommendation, I made my way all the way to Chua Chu Kang (CCK) just to try the food at Jalapeno's Pepper Express. Situated just next to the CCK MRT Station, the place specialises in "American, Mexican, Italian and fabulously eclectic Latino-influenced dishes" as stated in their website. The menu is rather long and you will be spoiled for choice - especially if you are the adventurous i-must-try-new-dishes kind of person as the food looks pretty exotic in small Singapore.

Check out the menu below:

Yum YUm YUMM.

I didn't manage to try alot of food (what a waste), what I managed to try was not bad! One of the drawbacks is that it doesn't look very appetizing as the dishes look rather plain and boring - no garnishing; just spaghetti, sauce and meat (which you can add on separately). However, the taste was not too bad, I kinda like it. At it's price, i guess it is pretty value for money.

The must-try dishes are actually the desserts. Very very affordable and it is sOOOOOOo good it almost got me flushed with happiness.
You have got to try the Apple Crumble. At only $2.80, you get yummy crunchy apple pie with oozing apple filling on the inside, topped with vanilla ice cream with chocolate fudge topping. HEAVENLY!

If you intending to get one dish, one drink and probably a dessert, you probably would not spend more than $13. Minus the dessert, probably less than $10, for Halal-certified food that can be rather different from the rest in the Singapore.

My ratings:

  • Food / Drinks: 7/10
  • Ambience: 5.5/10
  • Service: 5.5/10

Overall: 6/10
- definitely value for money.
