Yes, I do have a thing for Japanese food.

Sushiiiiii. yummy.
In the past, I never liked eating wasabi. Not until I tried Shin Tokyo's.

For those of you who never tried eating sushi, sushi is generally accompanied by a little sweet soya sauce, and this green substance called 'wasabi' - almost equivalent to Malay's belachan or sambal tumis - except that it comes from some plant and it has a strong spicy aftertaste.

The spiciness, or erm, the hot-ness, of wasabi, really grabs you at your temples in your brain. like the sudden rush of blood to the head.. the sudden rush of adrenaline... and you'll go:
"OOHH, ARRGG (hot hot hot!)"
and then you start to have a little bit of tears in your eyes (and bypassers will think that you are crying over your food). and suddenly you feel your nasal passageway suddenly gets cleared, in such a way that would make the Nanny's voice become no longer squeaky (did you watch that episode when that Nanny tried wasabi thinking it was the new mustard?       no?   nvm..)

then you will mutter a short 'wah' or 'fuyooooo'  over the syiokkkneesss of wasabi, and prep yourself for another shot.
i kinda made it sound like a drug, havent i? heee
anyway, to really enjoy your sushi, please take this advice: don't be too daring with the wasabi especially if you are a virgin to wasabi. take it gradually, else you'll cry over your sushi, and it is not a pretty sight to behold.

In any case, in Singapore, there are oh-so-few Halal-certified sushi eateries. I know there are those who will buy it off the shelves of groceries stores, assuming it is halal. Well, it is up to the individual. I'm quite strict about it coz there is a possibility of alcohol being put into non-certified ones (since Japanese sushi are well known for their high levels of alcohol / sake).  Hence are there only a few.

My first experience of sushi in a local store is definitely Shin Tokyo's sushi.
I tasted the one in Tampines Century Square where it is housed together with Ramen Ten (which is good by the way, ill blog about it next time). I think it can also be found at Vivo and other places as well. Not too sure about it.

The best part about the sushi at Shin Tokyo is that they have great tasting and large variety of sushis as well as sashimis (i dont like sashimis, coz just not my type of food -coz it is raw haha. maybe someone can comment on sashimis for me).

Our favourites (from background to foreground):

Top photo: Spicy Cuttlefish Sushi, tempura Sushi (with Mayo) and i forgot what is the name the third one

This photo (from left): Tuna Mayo Sushi (the best i tell you!), Eel Sushi and Tempura Mayo sushi again.

The massive amount of Wasabi which turns out to not be enough for 2 people. heh.

Here, different coloured plates means different prices, served on the conveyor belt (you can order it from the waiter as well, but it will come in a separate plate). Now they are having a promotion where each white plate costs only 99cents each. The black and red ones are the more expensive / premium sushis which I havent really tried much yet. Anyway, the cheap white plates make it a great experience coz my friends and I will order several (read: many many) white plates and just binge ourselves in the cheap but superly satisfying sushis. yummmyy. it also explains how i managed to convert some of my friends into sushi lovers as well. ahaha

they are also generous with the wasabi and soy sauce. plus, service at the Tampines outlet is great. i think they see me there all the time, im probably more than a regular (a large maybe. pun intended).
